Checkups, Doctors, and Fitness
I feel great, I feel healthy, and I?m at a healthy weight, so why should I check with my doctor before starting a fitness program? Not everyone needs to check with his or her doctor before beginning a fitness program or weight loss program. So how do you know if you should? First of all, if you have any concerns at all about your level of health, you need to check with your doctor before beginning exercising an exercise program or making drastic changes in your diet. If you aren?t sure, here is some information to help you decide if you need to make an appointment before getting started. It is probably good to check with a doctor if you have any of the following health issues: ? Heart attack or at high risk for heart attack ? Physical activity cause moderate to severe pain in chest, joints, or muscles ? Arthritis or osteoporosis ? Receiving chemotherapy treatments ? Lung disease or asthma ? Liver, kidney, or heart disease ? Replacement of any joints ? Physical exertion causes loss of balance, dizziness, or loss of consciousness ? Take any medications regularly to manage a health condition ? Know you are pregnant ? Untreated injury or health conditions Of course this list is not meant to be all-inclusive, so use good judgment and common sense. When in doubt?see the doc! If you have health issues, you probably were given instructions regarding physical activity, but may not have paid attention because you couldn?t imagine feeling good enough to be all that active. If you can, pull out the information you received or make an appointment to meet with your doctor to refresh your memory. If you fit in any of the following categories, you may also want to see your doctor before beginning a new fitness program: ? High blood pressure ? Female over 55 years old ? Male over 45 years old ? High cholesterol ? History of early (before age 55) heart disease ? Smoke or recently (past 6 months) quit smoking ? Overweight or obese ? Take illegal drugs or abuse over the counter medication A fitness program will increase your health and longevity when you are healthy enough to participate in physical activity. Most health issues will allow for walking as part of a fitness program. Wearing fitness shoes like the Stepgym shoe, will increase fitness, and will reduce impact for those with health issues, like replaced joints. To order a Stepgym shoe go to Stepgym.com.
